First ever blog
Hello and welcome to the first official blog from The Point! We’ve started this blog to give you the inside story on this fantastic new development at Lancashire County Cricket Club.
Â
Demolition of the existing buildings took place in late 2008 and we’ve been busy ever since now we reach the stage where the framework of an impressive, enormous building looms over the office and the idea of The Point is starting to become a reality. This really will be a stunning building and we can’t wait to go on the first hard-hat tours when they start in early 2010.
Â
It was strange to see the corner of the ground that will make room for The Point demolished last year. I think we all wanted a go on the wrecking ball contraption it seemed straight out of a cartoon! The Tyldesley, County and Jubilee Suites all went, as did the old Board of Control.
However, looking at the plans for what was to replace them made us desperate for the building work to begin!
Â
We’ve had lots of exciting events since the building of The Point began. The Rt Hon Andy Burnham MP was on hand at the official turf-cutting ceremony (for full story, click here) and we’ve even had two of the Lancashire players, Oliver Newby and Kyle Hogg, in one of the diggers!
Â
Â
One feature of the site that we’re all pleased with is the viewing hole which allows passers-by to get a great view of what’s going on behind the white and blue walls.
Â
You forget that the enormous structure that is popping up before our eyes is the work of human beings and some generously sized pieces of equipment. Looking through this hole is like having a snapshot of another world a world that is fast becoming recognisable as the digital images of The Point with which we’ve all grown so familiar.
Â
As we draw closer to the completion of The Point, this blog will take you through the twists and turns of making computer generated designs become a reality. There will be behind-the-scenes pictures and stories to bring you closer to this stunning new development.

This is an extremely impressive development, but one thing puzzles me. The mock-up photo at the top of the page shows the as-it-will-be development next to the as-at-is-at -the-moment-Pavilion. All other ‘photos’ of the overall development (Phase 2) show the Pavilion as either radically altered or completely demolished and replaced or virtually unrecognisable – or is it to be completely undisturbed?
The situation is so confusing as to completely misleading. What happens when the pitches are re-oriented? Where is the sight screen in your mock-ups?
I would welcome a reply from someone because as an LCCC member I have been asked to endorse the overall development which I cannot in all conscience do until I fully understand it. It would help if I could have the planning application numbers for Phase 2 so that I can examine it on the Trafford Council web-site.
Thank you.
I see what you mean about the confusion, but this particular site relates only to The Point, the Club’s new, self-funded conference and events facility, due for completion in late June 2010.
The image at the top of the page is the architect’s impression of how The Point will look on opening next year. The fly-through does use artistic licence to give a flavour of how it might look if the ground’s wider re-development gets the go-ahead, but it’s not meant to be taken as an absolute image, nor was it meant to have exact detailing of the final product.
Phase 2 relates to the wider re-development of the ground and the surrounding area. The planning application for this phase was submitted last week to Trafford Council, and the entire planning document will be available via the Council’s website in the coming days.
All information relating to Phase 2 can be found at the Club’s official website, http://www.lccc.co.uk, and this will be continually updated as things progress. There is also another website, http://www.oldtraffordashes.co.uk which enables people to lodge their support for the re-development scheme.
I know this is quite a long reply, but I do hope you find it useful.
