It’s just not cricket!
When students from Wellacre Technology College, Flixton paid a visit to Lancashire County Cricket Club’s world famous Old Trafford cricket ground, instead of cricket pads and gloves, they were met with hi-visibility jackets and hard hats……..
They were visiting the construction site of ‘The Point,’ LCCC’s new conference and events suite as part of their diploma studies. The students are all studying for a level 2 New Diploma in Construction & the Built Environment and practical skill development from the construction sector is one of the skills required. The visit was arranged through Education Business Solutions (EBS) which believes that linking up students with business can be useful for both parties. EBS is keen for companies to get involved with schools in their area to help create links. After giving the students a health and safety briefing, the Morgan Ashurst construction team took students on a ‘guided tour’ of the site to help them see how theory applies in practise on a real construction site.
“We are working in the heart of the community so we believe it is really important to keep local people involved with the scheme,â€
says Paul Galloway, Morgan Ashurst Project Manager, who is based in the local offices in Salford Quays.
“The construction industry faces a shortfall of 42,000 skilled new recruits so we really want to do all we can to encourage promising candidates.”
Paul adds:
“The students from Wellacre Technology College were very attentive and keen to learn about the different construction activities taking place. We hope the visit helps them with their studies.â€
The Point at LCCC will be working closely with other schools and colleges in the area in the near future.
